About Deià and surrounding area:

Deia enjoys a reputation as the famous "artist village" of Majorca. Even as far back as the late Middle Ages members of the famous Italian Visconti family would visit Deia. They built a stately villa named "Forca i manya" - power and skill. This "Palacio Forsimany" still stands today. Deia's reputation as an artists' colony was then acquired during the last century. In 1929, the then world-famous poet Robert Graves acquired the "Ca n 'Alluny" finca, in which he lived until 1985. In his tow he brought painters (Pablo Picasso), musicians (Jimi Hendrix) and actors (Peter Ustinov and Ava Gardner) who discovered in the beauty of this picturesque village, and each lived there for a while.

Arts and Culture in Deia

The prominence of last century lived in comfortable villas and fincas which did not match the standards of the traditional village houses. Meanwhile, the real estate offering has grown in Deia thanks to loving restoration work, ranging from charming village houses, to small, cosy cottages with modern comforts right through to prestigious villas and fincas with breathtaking views of the sea. The colours, the look and the overall atmosphere of the village composes a creative atmosphere that has inspired artists and creative people until today. Therefore, the long tradition of painting in Deia by international artists, talented amateur painters and schools will continue. The results of this art can be viewed in numerous exhibitions, which are scattered around town.

History of Deia

Deia, from the Arabic "Al daia" was, for the Muslims of that time a major producer of cereals, vegetables and fruit. On the terraced fields, which date back to the time of the high culture Arab Gardens, there are still gorgeous vegetables, olive trees, citrus and almond trees that flourish. After the defeat of the Moors the Bernardine monks moved into the village. During this time the town had nearly 1,000 inhabitants, a number which has not been reached since (about 600).

Until the beginning of the 19th century Deia was plagued by pirate raids. Therefore all roads and alleys leading to the houses were built with natural stones and in many cases lead up to the fortified church "San Juan Bautista". In this parish church, dedicated to St. John the Baptist, with its medieval bell tower, the residents of Deia and the surrounding villas could seek refuge from the pirates. The cemetery, which is located on the highest point of the mountain hill, offers visitors a truly breath taking panoramic view.

On one side are the forested mountain peaks of the mighty Teix (1064m) at whichs feet you find the artfully stacked stone terraces with field crops, gnarled olive trees and majestic royal palms. Then, below lies the village with the grey walls and red roofs, here and there a finca. On the other side are the jagged reefs of the coast, where the waves break before endless blue of the sea. During a walk through the cemetery, where even more famous names are to be found among the grave stones, thoughtful visitors can escape in contemplation on the way back to the village.
