Pollença was founded in 1229 by the Catalan conqueror Rey Jaume I, who brought Christianity to the island. Very famous is the Calvary-Mountain, an excursion destination to be reached by climbing up 365 stairs. The municipality of Pollença has about 13.000 inhabitants.
