Which Mallorca type are you? -Blogseries Part 2 – The commuter

Mallorca attracts a wide variety of people who want a second home on the island, or even wish to settle here. We have placed the various personalities and their characteristics under the microscope and divided them into sections called “archetypes”. These types we have then fitted into established areas and places on the island where they can feel especially comfortable and which are beneficial for them.

The second part of our little series is concerned – after the “quiet connoisseurs” – with an archetype which is currently more frequently encountered on the island:

The commuter

There is no doubt that Mallorca is more popular than ever, and commuters benefit as more and more flights are available throughout the year. No matter which city in Germany is the destination, it is no more than two or three hours away, and the proximity to the European continent is one of the island´s major benefits.

What characterizes the commuter and what is important for him?

The decision to move to the island is one which affects the entire life. Many people, therefore, prefer to have the best of both worlds. That is, they spend as much time as possible on their favorite island, but still have their main residence at home where they are insured, and their social structures remain untouched.

Particularly self-employed entrepreneurs and businessmen or freelancers and artists can, with clever time-management, benefit from this option. For those who can work regardless of their location, commuting can be a creative and rewarding adventure.

But even some full-time workers and employees can manage their working hours so that an (extended ) weekend is sometimes available especially when, for example, the partner is already established or located mainly on the island.

The capital Palma is not only very popular with commuters .

Important for those who often fly home to attend to customer appointments or to check on the company organisation for example, is short and uncomplicated access to the airport. Equally important is a creative atmosphere – for example, a trendy district for the more urban orientated, the sea or a green oasis in order to work in peace, for example, for the author and the artist.

The key is an ambience from which the commuter can draw strength and which makes the permanent change of location worthwhile.

A town – countryside exchange is often in high demand for people who commute! For these reasons Porta Mallorquina offers a wide range of properties – from modern, low-maintenance and easily accessible apartments to well located terraced houses, or detached houses through to romantic fincas or the stately luxury property – whatever suits your requirements.

Which area of the island is best suited for commuting?

Undoubtedly Palma …

Palma is the cultural hub of the Balearic Islands. Probably on no other European island can more galleries be found in a relatively small area, nowhere else are there more freely accessible and changing cultural events and nowhere else are more high-profile museums concentrated. The gastronomic diversity is as varied as the cultural scene and the great shopping opportunities.

You can know this city for a long time and still be surprised time and again. Lots of things are always changing and Palma is never boring, because so many treasures are revealed only after years. Palma is “addictive” , no matter in which city you are otherwise at home.

Good connections – with or without a car

Those who decide on Palma’s city centre do not even need a car – Son Sant Joan airport is just 10 kilometers southeast of the capital, and the airport bus No.1 leaves every 12 minutes.. From the central Plaça España it is only 20 minutes to the airport (only early departures before 7:00 can not be reached by bus, as the first bus departs at 5:30 from the ferry terminal). Those who prefer to use their own car can park at the airport on a daily basis. There are a number of providers on the airport grounds and the adjoining commercial area ready at all times with a shuttle service to and from the terminal. This service is not expensive like, for example, Airport Parking at 4 euros per day.

Which districts of Palma are popular with commuters?

Particularly trendy areas such as Santa Catalina or the old town are highly sought after (1). Life pulsates here and new bars, shops and galleries are constantly opening.

Likewise, green fringe locations like La Bonanvona, Son Armadams or Son Vida are also in demand. Also Palma’s beautiful seaside suburbs such as Portixol, Cala Gamba, and Ciutat Jardin to Can Pastilla (two kilometers from the airport) are very attractive, as well as the waterfront suburbs in the south-west like Cala Mayor and Sant Agustí or, further inland, Genova and Establiments.

In the countryside

Particularly suitable are also, thanks to easy access by the well-developed highways and country roads, the south-west, the south-east, or even the centre of the island.

Popular with commuters are also places in the interior of the island such as Portol, Puntiro, Sa Cabaneta, and Marratxi. Likewise, villages close to Palma with mountain flair like Puigpunyent and Bunyola.

The south-west benefits from the easy access by the motorway that leads from Palma to Andratx ( the Ma-1), and people who appreciate ocean views prefer to live in Illetas, Portals Nous, Palmanova or El Toro and Santa Ponsa. Fans of the countryside appreciate Calvia, Capdella or even Andratx (approx. 45 minutes to the airport).

To the east

The Ma-19 motorway connects the airport with Llucmajor making not only Llucmajor itself attractive, but also residential areas on the steep,south-eastern coast like Bahia Grande, Bahia Azul, Las Palmeras, Maioris, Puigderrós or Sa Torre with its beautiful villas and comfortable new apartments are popular.

Algaida, with its beautiful surrounding countryside, is also a well-liked and very authentic village for commuters. Thanks to the Manacor – Palma highway, the Ma-15, it is also only 20 minutes drive to the airport.

As you can see commuters have a wide variety of excellent possibilities to get quickly from A to B, and as the infrastructure is so good consideration should be given to offering the whole family the chance of life on Mallorca. All international schools are easy to reach from the places mentioned so, if one day the commuter gets tired of the frequent flying, he could change his situation and manage to finally move to the island.
